Waist-to-Hip-Ratio

Why use this as a measurement?

While body mass index (BMI) is a great way to tell if you're a healthy weight, it doesn't always tell you the whole story. BMI is a measure of how healthy your weight is for your height. If your BMI is over the healthy range, this means that you're probably carrying extra fat.

Here's the thing though, your health could be more at risk depending on where you store your excess fat. We all store spare body fat under the skin, and also around the vital organs in our abdomen. We know that tummy fat can cause more health problems than, for example, fat carried around your bum or  thighs. Having a large amount of tummy fat (when compared to having fat around the bottom or thighs) makes you more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and heart problems.

What the scores mean

It isn't a complicated structure - three categories with slightly different measurements for males and females.  Pay attention to your BMI and WHR in unison for a more balanced context
